Málaga, Granada or Almería? Our honest take on drive times to Almuñécar and Motril, who flies where, and the bus, train and ferry options.
Most buyers from northern Europe land at Málaga, and for good reason. Granada and Almería both work for the Costa Tropical too, though, and on the right day one of them is the smarter choice. Here is how we see the three, with drive times to Almuñécar and Motril and a plain account of how to get from the terminal to the coast.
Three airports, one coast
Málaga-Costa del Sol is the big one. It handled 26,760,549 passengers in 2025, up 7.4% on 2024, and it sits about 8 km south-west of Málaga city. Granada's Federico García Lorca airport closed 2025 with 1,152,872 passengers, up 1.7%. Almería handled 801,689, up 1.9%, and lies about 9 km east of Almería city.
Passenger numbers tell you little about the journey, though. What matters more is the distance from the airport to your front door, and a small terminal with a short drive often beats a big one with a long one.
How long the drive really takes
Almuñécar sits roughly the same distance from Málaga and Granada. Wikivoyage puts it at 55 minutes by car on the motorway from either airport. Transfer companies quote a little longer, about 89 km and 1 hour 6 minutes from Málaga, and 95 km and 1 hour 6 minutes from Granada. Almería is the outlier at 161 km and 1 hour 58 minutes, so it only makes sense when the fare is hard to beat.

Transfer quotes are commercial estimates, and they shift with the vehicle and the traffic. A local guide advises allowing about 1 hour 20 minutes from Málaga airport, which is the figure we would plan around. Treat all of these as planning numbers, not timetables.
If Motril is where you are headed, the picture changes. Granada is the shortest drive at 83 km and 56 minutes. From Málaga it is 114 km and 1 hour 16 minutes, and from Almería 127 km and 1 hour 20 minutes.

Who flies where
Málaga has the choice. Andalucía Today reported in November 2025 that the airport offered 118 cities in 34 countries for winter 2025/26, on 217 routes. London was the busiest route, with nearly 907,000 seats. Amsterdam and Copenhagen were the only Dutch and Scandinavian destinations named, and the report said routes to Germany and Poland grew by double digits, without naming them. That is a winter snapshot, so check the current schedule before you book.
Granada is much smaller. Aena's list shows 13 destinations served by 8 airlines, and from northern Europe the only city on it is London Luton, flown by Wizz Air UK. There is no Dutch, German, Nordic or Polish route on the page, and it gives no start or end dates.
Almería leans on the UK. Aena's January 2026 release says the UK was its largest international market in 2025, with 249,124 passengers, up 26.1%. Belgium, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic and Luxembourg followed, and two UK routes began at the start of the winter season. The list changes by season, so look at Aena's live version before you plan around it.
Getting from the airport to the coast
ALSA runs a direct bus from Málaga airport to Almuñécar. The Almuñécar guide lists one service a day, leaving at 14:30 from the arrivals area, though another page on the same site gives 14:15, so check before you travel. A route via Málaga bus station takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. Neither option has a fare on the guide, so confirm times and prices on alsa.com.
Hiring a car gives you the most freedom once you are on the coast. Allow about 1 hour 20 minutes from the airport. The last stretch to La Herradura and west Almuñécar is about 5 to 6 km after exit 305 on the motorway.
No train line serves Almuñécar, so the train is for the long middle of the journey. A March 2025 report said Renfe ran six daily AVE services between Madrid and Granada, taking 3 hours 32 minutes, though schedules may have changed since. On the Málaga line, El Español reported 174 weekly Madrid to Málaga trains from 17 July 2026, after eight extra weekly services were added. Take the AVE to either city, then a bus or a car for the last stretch.
If the sea appeals more, Armas Trasmediterránea runs a ferry from Motril to Melilla. Its site lists the Volcán de Timanfaya on a 6-hour crossing from Motril at 23:30, arriving at 06:30, for 5 and 6 November 2026, with the return from Melilla at 15:30 to 20:30 on the same dates. The site also shows a fare from 50 euros with no date attached. These are specific sailings rather than a full weekly timetable, and Wikipedia notes that the port also has ferries to Nador, Tanger-Med and Al Hoceima.

Which airport suits you
Málaga has the routes and the passengers. Granada is the quickest drive to Motril and has one northern European link on Aena's list. Almería is the longest drive to both towns, though its UK traffic grew fast in 2025. For most buyers the cheapest flight on the right dates settles it, and the drive is the second check. The Costa Tropical buyer's guide covers the towns themselves, and if Almuñécar is on your shortlist, our Almuñécar piece is a good read before you fly.
